UNDP Language AI Accelerator.

Contributing to African language data ecosystems through the AI Hub for Sustainable Development.

Overview

A collaborative design programme for African language data

Neuravox Foundation participated in the UNDP / Italian G7 Presidency Local Language Partnerships Accelerator Pilot, a collaborative design programme under the AI Hub for Sustainable Development.

The accelerator brought together innovators, researchers, ecosystem builders, and development partners to explore how African language data ecosystems can be strengthened through responsible partnerships, community ownership, public good stewardship, and shared infrastructure.

Why it matters

Unlocking language data, responsibly

Many African languages remain underrepresented in speech and language technology because the data needed to build it is fragmented, underdocumented, inaccessible, or governed without sufficient community benefit. The accelerator examined how language data can be unlocked and stewarded responsibly while supporting local innovation and public value.

Neuravox's role

A participating organization

Neuravox Foundation contributed perspectives from its work on African language data, community radio, and public interest technology. Participation in the accelerator informed Neuravox's approach to language data governance and strengthened connections with international partners working on African language data.

Key themes

What the accelerator explored

01

African language data ecosystems

Strengthening the datasets, tools, and communities behind African language technologies.

02

Community ownership & public good stewardship

Models where communities retain ownership and language data is stewarded as a public good.

03

Partnership models

Ethical partnership models for developing and adopting language AI.

04

Local innovation & industrial development

Connecting language data to local innovation and broader industrial development.

05

Data governance & licensing

Governance, consent, and licensing approaches that keep reuse responsible.

06

Shared infrastructure

Scalable, shared infrastructure so inclusion is built in from the start.

Community paper output

Scaling language data ecosystems

As part of the accelerator ecosystem, Neuravox contributed to the community paper "Scaling Language Data Ecosystems to Drive Industrial Development Growth." The paper brings together perspectives from participating organizations on scaling language data ecosystems to support local innovation and industrial development.
